This month’s Workout of the Month focuses on building a strong, functional core that does more than just look good—it works for you in real life. Developed by Elite Personal Trainer Melanie McLaren, this routine targets the muscles that support your spine and pelvis while improving control, mobility, and coordination.

Your Core-Strengthening Circuit

Start with a 5–10 minute warm-up including dynamic stretches, foam rolling, or light treadmill walking to increase circulation and prepare your body.

Trainer Tip: Focus on keeping your core muscles engaged throughout the workout, especially during arm or leg movement. Only add progression exercises once you’ve mastered the basics with proper form.

1. Bird Dog

  • On all fours, extend opposite arm and leg. Tap hand to knee under the body, then extend again
  • 6 reps each side | 2 sets

2. Quadruped Plank

  • From hands and knees, lift knees 1–2 inches off the floor. Hold with hips steady and core braced.
  • 30-second hold | 2 sets
  • Progression Option: Tap opposite shoulders while keeping hips stable.
  • 12 alternating taps | 2 sets

3. Glute Bridges

  • On your back, feet hip-width apart. Lift hips without arching back, squeezing glutes at the top.
  • 10 reps | 2 sets
  • Progression Option: Hold bridge position and lift one foot at a time.
  • 2 alternating marches | 2 sets

4. Seated Spinal Twist

  • Sit tall with legs extended. Rotate through the spine, holding each twist for 3 counts.
  • 5 rotations each side | 2 sets

5. Single Leg Lowers

  • On your back, engage your core and lower one leg at a time. Keep back flat.
  • 12 alternating lowers | 2 sets
  • Progression Option: Lower both legs together with control.
  • 6 reps | 2 sets

6. Windshield Wipers

  • Lie on your back, arms out, legs bent or straight. Sway legs side to side with control.
  • 6 reps each side | 2 sets

7. Side-Lying Bananas

  • Lie on your side with hips stacked. Lift both legs and reach top arm toward feet.
  • 6 reps each side | 2 sets

8. Foam Roller Side Extensions

  • Supine: Lay lengthwise on roller, arms open to stretch chest.
  • Prone: On stomach, roll arms forward and lift chest using upper back.
  • 4–6 reps each version | 2 sets
