Matthew McBride and Michael Des Gaines, trainers leading the teen beginner strength training program at ClubSport Aliso Viejo

Helping teens feel confident, capable, and safe in the gym starts with the right foundation. This month’s Workout of the Month at ClubSport Aliso Viejo features a Teen Beginner Strength Training Program designed specifically for teens who are new to working out or strength training for the first time.

Led by experienced personal trainers Matthew McBride and Michael Des Gaines, this program focuses on teaching the basics, reinforcing proper technique, and creating a positive gym experience—without intimidation or overwhelm.

Why a Teen Beginner Strength Training Program Matters

Strength training offers tremendous benefits for teens when done correctly, including improved confidence, coordination, posture, and overall athletic performance. At ClubSport Aliso Viejo, our approach prioritizes:

  • Safe, age-appropriate strength training
  • Proper use of gym equipment
  • Building consistency before increasing weight
  • Developing lifelong healthy habits

This teen beginner strength training program in Aliso Viejo is ideal for teens who want to feel comfortable on the gym floor while learning how to train the right way from day one.

How the Program Works

This program follows a simple and effective 2-day training split, making it easy to follow and repeat each week.

Program Overview

  • Frequency: 2–3x weekly
  • Intensity: Moderate to heavy (RPE 7–9). Add weight or reps each week.
  • Schedule: 2 days per week
    – Day 1: Upper Body
    – Day 2: Lower Body
  • Session Length: Approximately 45 minutes
  • Training Guidelines
    – 2 sets of 8–10 reps per exercise
    – 60 seconds rest between sets
    – Slow, controlled movement
    – Weights should feel challenging by the final 2 reps—never painful

This structure allows teens to learn movement patterns, build strength gradually, and avoid overtraining.

Tips for Teen Training Success

To get the most out of this beginner program, we encourage teens to follow these key principles:

  • Move slowly and with control on every rep
  • Choose weights that feel challenging by reps 8–10
  • Stop immediately if any movement feels painful
  • Focus on consistency and technique before increasing weight

Mastering the basics now sets teens up for long-term success in fitness and sports.
