Trainer Tip: How to Wrap Your Hands for Boxing

Knowing how to wrap your hands for boxing is essential to prevent injuries and enhance performance. Hand wraps provide crucial support for your wrists, knuckles, and fingers, stabilizing the small bones and tendons to reduce the risk of fractures or sprains. Whether you’re sparring, hitting a heavy bag, or attending a Boxing Conditioning class at ClubSport, properly wrapped hands allow you to punch with confidence while keeping your wrists secure. Additionally, wraps absorb sweat, prolonging the life of your gloves and improving your grip during intense training.

With boxing being such an effective workout for the entire body, taking a few minutes to wrap your hands correctly ensures you can train hard, stay safe, and avoid setbacks.

Step-by-Step: How to Wrap Your Hands for Boxing

Follow this guide to ensure your hands are secure and ready for action. For this, you’ll need a pair of boxing wraps (180 inches is ideal for adults; youth wraps may be shorter).

Step 1: Loop the Thumb

  • Place the loop at the end of the wrap over your thumb.
  • Make sure to start with the wrap facing the back of your hand to avoid twisting during the process.

Step 2: Wrap the Wrist

  • Wrap around your wrist 3-4 times. This provides stability and prevents hyperextension during punches.
  • Adjust the tightness to be secure but not restrictive.

Step 3: Secure the Knuckles

  • Wrap across your knuckles 3-4 times to cushion your impact.
  • Keep your fingers relaxed and spread to avoid the wrap becoming too tight once you make a fist.

Step 4: Wrap Between the Fingers

  • Take the wrap between each finger (starting between your pinky and ring finger) to prevent the material from bunching up during training.

Step 5: Reinforce the Knuckles and Back of the Hand

  • After wrapping between the fingers, bring the wrap back over the knuckles for additional padding.

Step 6: Secure the Thumb

  • Wrap around the base of your thumb to protect it, especially during hooks and uppercuts.

Step 7: Finish with the Wrist

  • Use any remaining wrap to circle your wrist again for added support.
  • Secure with the Velcro closure, ensuring the wrap is tight but comfortable.
