Boxing Coach Trevor Sambrano doing the Boxing Fundamentals Workout of the Month

If you’re ready to train like a top fighter, this Boxing Fundamentals Workout is for you! Inspired by championship contenders, this routine combines strength, coordination, and endurance. Each exercise is designed to enhance functional movement, power, and balance. Get ready to push yourself with these dynamic moves!

The Warmup: Skipping Rope (1 round x 3 minutes)

Jumping rope is an essential exercise for fighters. Whether you’re working on double unders or just finding a rhythm, jumping rope connects your feet and arms and builds endurance fast. Tip: 10 minutes of skipping is equivalent to a 3-mile run!

The Boxing Fundamentals Workout

1. Alternating Walking Lunge (1 round x 3 minutes)

Walking lunges are excellent for leg strength and stability. Use a small area (about 5 yards) and practice lunging forward and backward. Focus: Maintain a natural gait; avoid exaggerated movements that wouldn’t allow you to explode from the position.

2. Alternating Side Lunge (1 round x 3 minutes)

This exercise is similar to the walking lunge but focuses on lateral movement. Imagine holding a bar as if prepping for a squat. Step to the side, shoulder-width apart, and slide your other leg over to meet it, returning to your starting position.

3. Rolling (1 round x 3 minutes)

Time to work on rotational power! Roll your head from side to side, imagining tracing a “U” shape. Goal: Keep your balance by not leaning forward and maintain control of your legs, hips, and torso.

4. Slipping (1 round x 3 minutes)

Practice slipping punches by imagining dodging a glove. Move from one side to the other, rotating your head from the temple to the opposite shoulder. Tip: Less is more; small, controlled movements are key for balance and quick reactions.

5. Straight Punches and Jabs (2 rounds x 3 minutes, 30 seconds rest)

Straight Punches Technique: Begin with exaggerated arm movements to build muscle memory, then focus on natural, controlled jabs and crosses. Pretend you’re at an arcade playing Whack-a-Mole, but with a sharper technique.

Jab Technique: Open your stance, push off your back leg, and extend your front foot as your arm reaches out for a small, powerful forward step.

6. Core Finisher: Abs Variety (2 rounds x 20 reps each)

Take a cue from top fighters like Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Alvarez—variety is key to a strong core! Mix up exercises like:

  • Jack Knives
  • Bicycles
  • Mountain Climbers
  • Planks

Complete 20 reps of each exercise for 2 rounds, focusing on controlled, deliberate movements.

Why Boxing Training?

Boxing is one of the most effective workouts you can do. Here’s why:

  1. Improves Cardiovascular Health
Boxing workouts are high-intensity, keeping your heart rate up, which is fantastic for cardiovascular health. It’s like running or biking but with a more dynamic twist.
  2. Builds Strength and Endurance
Punching, slipping, and footwork demand upper body, core, and leg strength. You’re not only working your muscles but also improving endurance through repetitive movements.
  3. Enhances Coordination and Reflexes
Boxing requires fast reactions and coordination between your upper and lower body. Practicing combinations and defensive moves trains your mind to respond quickly and improves body coordination.
  4. Promotes Mental Toughness
Boxing is as much a mental game as it is physical. Training helps build resilience, discipline, and confidence as you learn to control your movements, timing, and breathing.
  5. Burns Calories and Sculpts Muscle
Boxing burns a high number of calories per session, helping you lose fat and gain lean muscle. Plus, it works your arms, shoulders, core, and legs, giving you a full-body tone.
